In our journey of faith and service, reflecting on our personal well-being is vital. Recently, I decided to explore some questions from a self-care inventory to better understand this aspect of my life. Each week, I aim to consider a different question, moving across various categories to create a dialogue around the essential themes of self-care. One vital question stands out: “Am I paying attention to my personal life?” This query is foundational; self-care begins with the conscious decision to be attentive to our own needs.
The Bible emphasizes the importance of intentionality in self-care. If we are not deliberate about our own well-being, it often slips away amidst the demands of life and ministry. C.S. Lewis touches on this concept in The Screwtape Letters, highlighting how easily we can get caught up in a mindset that prioritizes everything above our own needs. The adage that “joy comes when Jesus is first, others are second, and we are last” can lead to an unhealthy neglect of self-care.
Ministry leaders and Christians often fall into the trap of feeling that to be effective servants or followers of Christ, we must sacrifice our own well-being. We may feel an immense need to be needed, leading us to overlook our personal care. Acting out of personality, gifts, or adrenaline can leave us spiritually drained. It’s crucial to remember that we cannot give what we do not possess. Our relationship with Christ must be nourished through self-care; without it, that connection may falter.
Busyness and a sense of our own importance frequently hinder our self-care efforts. Ironically, the more we neglect ourselves, the less capable we become of truly connecting with God and providing for others. If we fail to pay attention to our personal lives, we risk burnout, bitterness, moral failures, or even walking away from our ministry and faith. This introspective question is one we cannot ignore: Are we genuinely paying attention to our personal lives?
Personally, I have experienced varying degrees of success in this area. There are times I prioritize self-care effectively, while at other moments, I fall short. Generally, however, I find myself in a middle ground. Interestingly, my passion for Christ, love for myself and others, and energy for ministry are directly linked to how well I prioritize self-care. Although it’s often challenging, making self-care an essential focus yields tremendous benefits.
We must not fear confronting our personal lives with the same love, patience, grace, and passion that we extend to others. This practice goes beyond avoiding hypocrisy; it serves as a reminder that our journey is ultimately about Jesus Christ, who loved us first.
Let us strive to pay attention to our personal lives, embracing self-care without guilt. In doing so, we not only enrich our own lives but also enhance our ability to serve and love those around us. Together, may we keep this critical question at the forefront of our minds as we navigate our paths of faith and service.
